India’s Rising Cancer Burden

As per Cancer India and the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Cancer Registry Programme, cancer incidence in India has been rising steadily, with an estimated 1.46–1.5 million new cases reported annually, and projections indicating continued growth in the years ahead. It is estimated that one in nine Indians could develop cancer in their lifetime, with the overall burden expected to increase significantly due to population growth and ageing.

A PubMed Central study further notes that these figures represent diagnosed cases, and the actual numbers are likely higher—pointing to a growing national health concern. Despite this rising burden, access to timely and quality cancer care remains uneven across the country. Low awareness, delayed detection, and limited access to diagnostic and treatment facilities continue to affect outcomes.

The Gap

These challenges are compounded by gaps in infrastructure, a shortage of trained healthcare professionals, and the high cost of care, often forcing patients to travel long distances for treatment. The imbalance between early and late-stage detection highlights the need for earlier and more accurate diagnosis.

This growing gap underscores the need for accessible, high-quality cancer diagnostic infrastructure across India—one that enables early detection, improves diagnostic accuracy, and brings specialised care closer to patients through a more distributed and patient-centric model of cancer care.
